Metro St. Louis unemployment rate rises to 7.3 percent

The long, slow recovery of the St. Louis region’s job market came to a standstill in January.

In the first month of the year, the metro area, which includes Metro East, added just 100 jobs, according to a new estimate from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Meanwhile, the area’s unemployment rate ticked up one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.3 percent, after seasonal variations were taken into account, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

It was the fifth straight month of job gains for the region, but those gains have slowed to the point where they’re not keeping up with even the sluggish growth of the region’s workforce...
